SmartZone

(Glossary)

SmartZone describes both a family of Trunking System equipment and a Coverage Type. SmartZone connects multiple single sites (SmartNet) together into a single Radio Frequency Sub-System (RFSS), or "Zone", providing multi-site wide-area communications over large geographic areas such as a region, county, state, or small geographic areas with as few as two sites.

How it Works:

Via microwave or land-line circuitry, a Zone Controller manages all of the inter-site communications and activities. This provides seamless user-roaming across different sites within the Zone (RFSS), and efficient use of available channels and coverage capabilities. A radio determines, through Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) polling samples, the best Trunking Site to be used for SmartZone-enabled Trunking channels, allowing for preferred site and site search capabilities. A "SmartZoneā„¢ 4.1 System" uses a 3600 baud control channel, and supports analog, digital and mixed mode operations. A SmartZone coverage area can include up to twenty-eight channels per site, and up to sixty-four sites. Multiple SmartZone Zones may also be tied together into a wide area System via OmniLink.

SmartZone is enabled from the Trunking System Coverage Type field.

SmartZone is also configured from the Trunking Wide SmartZone fields and from the Trunking Wide Filter Constant fields.

SmartZone began as Type II. SmartZone then progressed to "ASTRO 25 IV&D" (Integrated Voice & Data) Trunking Systems capability, which are fully-digital, Project 25-compatible Systems using a 9600 baud control channel. Project 25 allows these Systems to link multiple Systems and even Wide Area Communications Networks (WACNs) together, regardless of the hardware vendor.
